BERLIN, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Leipzig missed the chance to jump atop the standings after losing 3-1 to Borussia Dortmund in the 15th round of Bundesliga on Saturday.

Both sides staged a high-paced and evenly balanced first half but for all that neither side was able to break the deadlock. Both defenses neutralized all efforts within the midfield and goalscoring opportunities were at a premium in the first 45 minutes.

Things changed though after the restart as Dortmund gradually assumed control and pressed Leipzig into its own territory.

Marco Reus tested Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi from a tight angle before Erling Haaland rattled the woodwork.

Leipzig's defense had its hands full to keep Dortmund at a distance yet Raphael Guerreiro and Sancho were able to unleash shots on target.

The "BVB" turned their dominance into a tangible reward 55 minutes into the game as Reus back-heeled Haaland's square pass to an unmarked Jadon Sancho, who scored the opener from inside the box into the near post corner.

Dortmund gained momentum and increased the pressure but Gulacsi was on guard to deflect Haaland's hammer to the crossbar in the 65th minute.

The visitor's play paid off in the 72nd minute when Sancho added an assist after setting up for Haaland, who nodded home the 2-0 lead from very close range.

The Norway international sealed the deal with 84 minutes gone after shrugging off four Leipzig defenders before passing to Sancho on the right-wing. The Englishman chipped the ball to the far post where Haaland headed home his brace to put the result beyond doubt.

Leipzig was only able to score a consolation goal in the dying minutes of the game after Sorloth tapped home his own rebound.

With the win, Dortmund cements its 4th place and reduced the arrears to the top three whereas Leipzig stays in the 2nd spot of the Bundesliga standings.

"We played well in the first half and were the better team. In the second half Dortmund benefitted from our mistakes and punished us with three goals," Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann said.

On Sunday, Augsburg encounter newcomers Stuttgart, and newly-promoted Arminia Bielefeld face Hertha Berlin to conclude the 15th round. Enditem
