Live COVID-19 updates: Russia reports 22,934 new cases

BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MOSCOW -- Russia confirmed 22,934 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the country's total caseload to 3,448,203, the country's COVID-19 response center said in a statement Tuesday.

The number of deaths increased by 531 to 62,804.

TBILISI -- Georgia reported 1,857 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing its total to 241,637.

Among the new cases, 754 were confirmed in the capital city of Tbilisi, said the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health.

JERUSALEM -- The number of active COVID-19 cases in Israel has reached a record high of 74,639 since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country in late February 2020, Israel's Ministry of Health said Tuesday.

The previous record was reported on Oct. 1, 2020 when the number was 72,400.

MANILA -- The Department of Health (DOH) of the Philippines on Tuesday reported 1,524 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number in the country to 491,258.

The death toll climbed to 9,554 after 139 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said, adding that 44 more patients recovered, raising the total number of recoveries to 458,172.

JAKARTA -- A total of 15 million doses of raw materials of COVID-19 vaccine from the Chinese biopharmaceutical company Sinovac Biotech arrived at Indonesia's Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Tuesday, the National Disaster Management Agency said.

"The government is bringing in the vaccine to increase the amount of vaccines that will be given to the public," the agency's head Doni Monardo said.

SHIJIAZHUANG -- North China's Hebei Province reported a total of 326 locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases and 234 asymptomatic cases from Jan. 2 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Vice Governor Xu Jianpei said on Tuesday.

Of the confirmed cases, 304 were reported in the provincial capital Shijiazhuang, 21 in the city of Xingtai, and one in the city of Langfang, Xu said at a press briefing.

BANGKOK -- Thailand confirmed 287 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, according to the Center for the COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

Of the new cases, 278 were local infections and nine others were those recently returning from abroad and testing positive in Thailand, CCSA spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin said. Enditem
