MOSCOW -- A fire in a nine-story residential building in the western Russian city of Yekaterinburg killed eight people Tuesday, including one child, according to the regional Investigative Committee.

"The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case on the reported death of eight people, including a child, whose bodies were discovered while extinguishing the fire," the committee said in a statement.

A total of 90 people, including nine children, were evacuated amid heavy smoke, said the local department of the Russian Emergencies Ministry. (Russia-Fire)

JAKARTA -- Divers on Tuesday retrieved a black box of the Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-500 plane that plunged into the water off the coast of the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Saturday, local TV reported here.

The black box was found on the seafloor between Lancang Island and Laki Island of Jakarta Gulf.

ISLAMABAD -- Four people were killed when their vehicle was hit by an avalanche in Mansehra district of Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, local media reported on Tuesday.

The deceased were on their way to a village in the district when their vehicle was buried under the avalanche on Monday morning, and rescue teams later recovered the bodies in the late hour of the night, the reports said. (Pakistan-Avalanche)

KINSHASA -- At least six people died when a barge sank on the Congo River, authorities in DR Congo's northeastern province of Tshopo said on Tuesday.

"A barge which was leaving Kisangani for Basoko sank on Friday evening. The toll today is six bodies which have been recovered, 237 survivors and 19 missing," Tshopo's vice governor, Maurice Abibu Sakapela, was quoted as saying.
