NEW YORK, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Total COVID-19 hospitalizations reached 8,926 on Monday in New York State, up from 8,645 on Sunday, tweeted Governor Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday.

Of the 196,671 COVID-19 tests reported on Monday in the state, 15,214 were positive, or 7.73 percent of the total, up from 6.72 percent one day earlier, said Cuomo, adding that the fatalities went down to 164 on Monday, compared with 170 on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the governor said, "New Yorkers age 65+ are now eligible for the COVID vaccine -- effective immediately. Check your eligibility and find vaccination locations near you."

"I urge patience as unfortunately there are far more eligible NYers than there is vaccine supply from the federal government," he added.

Starting on Monday, New Yorkers within priority group 1B can now begin scheduling appointments with individual providers, including pharmacies, local health departments, and hospitals, to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Those eligible to receive the vaccine include individuals 75 years and older, first responders, public safety officers, teachers and other school staff, in-person college instructors, childcare workers, public-facing grocery store workers, transit workers and individuals living and working in homeless shelters, according to an official statement.

As of Tuesday noon, the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University reported 39,834 coronavirus deaths in New York State, the worst in the country. Enditem
