TRIPOLI, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Tuesday welcomed a meeting in the city of Brega, some 600 km east of the capital Tripoli, between the finance ministers of the Libyan rival governments to consolidate the 2021 national budget.

The mission described the meeting as "encouraging and a much-needed step that should be matched by genuine efforts on the political track to form a unified government that will be better positioned to effectively implement the unified budget."

The statement stressed the importance of the unification and rationalization of the national budget to establish a more durable and equitable economic arrangement that would meet the needs for improved services and address the urgent requirement to repair the country's deteriorating infrastructure.

Libya is politically divided between eastern and western governments, including two central banks.

The UNSMIL has been leading efforts to end the division and unify the country's institutions by conducting dialogue sessions between the Libyan parties. Enditem
