CANBERRA, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Australian government has accelerated plans to develop a major gas basin in the Northern Territory (NT).

Michael McCormack, the acting prime minister and minister for infrastructure, recently announced 173 million Australian dollars (134.6 million U.S. dollars) in funding for infrastructure serving the Beetaloo Basin shale gas reserve.

It is one of five gas fields the government hopes to develop under its planned gas-led recovery from the economic impacts of COVID-19.

The announcement comes after the government announced 50 million AUD (38.9 million USD) for exploratory gas drilling in the Beetaloo Basin approximately 500 kilometers south-east of Darwin, the capital city of NT.

"Across Australia, we continue to roll out these types of major projects which lay the economic foundations for our recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and to enable the development of local industry, economic growth and job opportunities well into the future," McCormack said in a statement on Thursday.

Under the new plan for the basin Beetaloo gas will be connected to Australia's energy market in 2025.

Minister for Resources, Water and Northern Australia Keith Pitt said the basin was "expected to be one of the best basins in the world for gas condensate" and would create 6,000 jobs in the NT. Enditem
