Live COVID-19 updates: Bangladesh's cases rise to 526,485

BEIJING, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 762 new COVID-19 cases and 13 new deaths on Friday, making the tally at 526,485 and the death toll at 7,862, the Directorate General of Health Services said.

The official data showed that 13,678 samples were tested in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.

MANILA -- Foreign nationals travelling from or transiting through the United Arab Emirates and Hungary will be barred from entering the Philippines starting Jan. 17, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said on Friday.

The newly announced restriction is in the Southeast Asian country's further efforts to curb the spread of the new and more contagious coronavirus variants.

TEHRAN -- Iran's health ministry reported 6,485 daily COVID-19 cases on Friday, raising the total nationwide infections to 1,318,295.

The pandemic has so far claimed 56,621 lives in Iran, up by 83 in the past 24 hours, said Sima Sadat Lari, the spokeswoman for Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

BEIJING -- An international expert team of the World Health Organization (WHO) arrived in China and started quarantine at a hotel in Wuhan on Thursday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said Friday.

The 13-member team will conduct joint scientific research with Chinese scientists on the origin-tracing of the novel coronavirus, Zhao told a press briefing.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 3,211 new COVID-19 infections, the health ministry said on Friday, bringing the national total to 151,066.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that five of the new cases are imported and 3,206 are local transmissions.

Eight more deaths have been reported, pushing the death toll to 586.

SOFIA -- The Bulgarian Health Ministry on Friday morning reported a daily record high of 6,728 COVID-19 recoveries in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 150,370.

The previous daily record of 4,290 recoveries was reported on Dec. 12.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed infections has reached 210,951, an increase of 535 over the past 24 hours, and the COVID-19 death toll rose by 47 to 8,396, the ministry said. Enditem
