Riiber back to winning ways in Nordic Combined World Cup in Val di Fiemme

ROME, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Norwegian Jarl Magnus Riiber returned to winning ways at the beginning of 2021, as the Nordic Combined World Cup leader claimed the win of the first competition in Val di Fiemme, Italy on Friday.

Through a controlled performance, Riiber finished the race with an advantage of 8.4 seconds. Finnish athlete Ilkka Herola was placed second, while Vinzenz Geiger from Germany completed the podium, 9.8 seconds behind Riiber.

With a jump of 106 meters, Riiber led the field with 144.3 points and set up a comfortable cushion of 40 seconds on runner-up Akito Watabe of Japan.

Watabe, the winner in Thursday's provisional competition round, jumped 102 meters. with 134.3 points, he had a 10-second buffer on Fabian Riessle, who jumped 100.5 meters.

Riiber was in full control in the race, cleverly managing his advantage to finish first.

Riiber's advantage was 50 seconds at the halfway point of the race, and one lap later, the pursuers were around 40 seconds behind.

Herola increased his tempo on the last long uphill and had a gap of several meters ahead of the pursuers before claiming the second position, his seventh podium finish of his career.
