India's COVID-19 tally rises to 10,542,841

NEW DELHI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 10,542,841 on Saturday as 15,158 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the federal health ministry.

According to the official data, the death toll mounted to 152,093 as 175 COVID-19 patients died since Friday morning.

Saturday is a crucial day in India's fight against the pandemic as the nationwide vaccination drive is scheduled to be kicked off during the day.

There are still 211,033 active cases in the country, while 10,179,715 people have been discharged so far from hospitals after medical treatment.

Meanwhile, the federal government has ramped up COVID-19 testing facilities across the country, as over 180 million tests have been conducted so far.

As many as 185,765,491 tests have been conducted till Friday, out of which 803,090 tests were conducted on Friday alone, said the latest data issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Saturday.

The national capital Delhi, which has been one of the most COVID-19 affected places in the country, has been witnessing comparatively a lesser number of cases over the past couple of weeks. As many as 295 new cases and 10 deaths were registered in the national capital through Friday.

The national capital Delhi had recorded only four deaths on Thursday, the lowest number of deaths since May 11.

So far as many as 10,732 people have died in the national capital due to COVID-19, confirmed the Delhi's health department. Enditem
