BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 580 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Saturday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 71,820.

The daily caseload stayed below 600 for six straight days, after posting 451 on Jan. 11. It peaked at 1,240 on Dec. 25.

NEW DELHI -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the nationwide vaccination drive on Saturday to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through the day as many as 300,000 recipients would receive their first shot of the vaccine at 3,006 sites set up across the country. Around 100 beneficiaries will be vaccinated at each session site on the inaugural day.

CHANGCHUN -- A city in northeast China's Jilin Province on Saturday reported 49 new asymptomatic infections of the novel coronavirus as of 10 a.m., authorities said.

The cases were all close contacts or secondary close contacts of earlier infections exposed in a local training course in the city of Tonghua, according to a press conference held by the city government Saturday.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 10,542,841 on Saturday as 15,158 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the federal health ministry.

According to the official data, the death toll mounted to 152,093 as 175 COVID-19 patients died since Friday morning.

SHIJIAZHUANG -- North China's Hebei Province reported 90 locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases and 12 locally transmitted asymptomatic cases on Friday, the provincial health commission said Saturday.

Of the new confirmed cases, 83 were in the provincial capital Shijiazhuang, including seven previously reported asymptomatic cases. The other seven cases were reported in the city of Xingtai.

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles County is about to hit another grim milestone this weekend as the number of COVID-19 cases countywide inches towards 1 million, local health officials said Friday.

The county, home to 10 million residents, reported on Friday 15,051 new confirmed cases and 258 additional deaths, pushing its count to 989,928 with 13,489 related deaths, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported in a daily release. Enditem
