HANOI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam recorded one new confirmed case of COVID-19 on Saturday, raising its total tally to 1,537 with 35 deaths, according to its Ministry of Health.

The new case is a foreign expert who recently entered the country from abroad and was quarantined upon arrival.

The ministry also announced that 1,380 patients have been given the all-clear as of Saturday.

Meanwhile, nearly 18,000 people are being quarantined and monitored, the ministry said.

During a meeting of the national steering committee for COVID-19 prevention and control on Friday, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, also head of the committee, said that Vietnamese citizens who enter the country through land border gates and undergo quarantine at military establishments will be exempted from quarantine fees.

This is part of the efforts by the Vietnamese government to prevent illegal immigration and ensure the strict implementation of quarantine regulations, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Dam also stressed the need to extend the concentrated quarantine period to more than 14 days for arrivals from countries and regions that have reported infections of new variants of COVID-19. Enditem
