ABUJA -- Scores of Boko Haram militants were killed in a gunfight with Nigerian troops at a military formation in the country's northeastern state of Borno, said a spokesman for the armed forces on Saturday.

Benard Onyeuko, the spokesman for the military in the restive northeast region, told Xinhua that the gunfight followed an attempt by the militants to attack the troops' location at the outskirts of Marte town in Borno late Friday. (Nigeria-Boko Haram-Attack)

ROME -- Five people died and seven others were hospitalized in critical condition in what rescuers said was a probable case of carbon monoxide poisoning at a rest home near Rome, the Italian National Fire Department said Saturday.

The rest home, called Villa Diamanti, is located in the town of Lanuvio, south of Rome, the Lazio Public Health Service said in a statement. (Italy-Accident)

UNITED NATIONS -- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday condemned the attack against a convoy of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) that took place on Friday near Tessalit in Kidal region, which resulted in the death of an Egyptian peacekeeper and serious injuries to another.

Through a statement attributable to his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, as well as to the people and government of Egypt. He wished a speedy and full recovery to the injured peacekeeper. (UN-Mali-Attack-Guterres)

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi security forces killed two militants of the extremist Islamic State (IS) group and arrested six others on Saturday across the country, the Iraqi military said.

An army force, backed by Iraqi aircraft, attacked an IS hideout near the town of al-Garma in the northwest the city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, leaving two IS militants killed, commander of Anbar's Operations Command Nasir al-Ghannam said in a statement.
