BUENOS AIRES, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Former Real Madrid and Argentina international midfielder Fernando Gago has been appointed head coach of Aldosivi, the Argentine top flight club said on Saturday.

The 34-year-old replaces Angel Guillermo Hoyos, who was sacked earlier this month after Aldosivi's unimpressive performances in the Diego Maradona Cup.

"Welcome to Aldosivi, Fernando Gago," the Mar del Plata-based side said on Twitter, adding that he would take charge of his first training session next Thursday.

Gago, who played for Real Madrid from 2007 to 2012, earned 61 Argentina caps and was a member of the Albiceleste squad that finished second at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. His club career also included spells at Valencia, Roma and Boca Juniors.

He announced his retirement in November following a series of serious knee and Achilles injuries. Enditem
