Live COVID-19 updates: Argentina confirms first case of new variant of coronavirus

BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BUENOS AIRES -- The Argentinean government confirmed on Saturday the first case in the country of a new coronavirus variant that was first identified in Britain and appears to be more contagious.

The new variant was detected in a traveler who arrived asymptomatic in Argentina from Germany at the end of December 2020, Argentina's Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Roberto Salvarezza wrote on Twitter.

SAO PAULO -- Brazil registered 1,050 deaths from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 209,296, the Ministry of Health reported on Saturday.

Additionally, another 61,567 cases were registered in the last 24 hours, bringing the national total to 8,455,059.

BEIJING -- The Chinese mainland on Saturday reported 109 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 96 locally transmitted cases and 13 arriving from outside the mainland, the National Health Commission said Sunday.

Of the locally transmitted cases, 72 were reported in Hebei, 12 in Heilongjiang, 10 in Jilin, and two in Beijing, the commission said in its daily report.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand reported 10 cases of COVID-19 in managed isolation in two days, said the Ministry of Health in a statement on Sunday.

Of the new cases identified since the last media statement on Friday, one case was classified as historical and deemed not infectious, said the statement. Enditem
