ISLAMABAD, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Monday that the country's proposed markets to be established along its borders with neighboring Afghanistan and Iran will boost trade, foster peace and check smuggling.

The establishment of these markets was of utmost importance for the prosperity of the people living in the tribal districts of northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and border areas of southwest Balochistan province, Khan said during a high-level meeting here.

"The markets would contribute to local development and help the government address menace of smuggling and boost legal trade across the border," said the prime minister.

During the meeting, Khan was briefed on the draft of total 18 proposed border markets, and the progress made so far in negotiations with Iranian and Afghan officials.

The prime minister directed to fast-track efforts and formulate a comprehensive strategy for the establishment of border markets.

According to a proposal plan, 12 markets will be established along the Afghanistan border and six at border areas with Iran. Enditem
