BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BEIJING -- The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has deposited a new COVID-19 variant detected in South Africa and shared the strain information with research institutes and sci-tech resource sharing platforms in the country.

The COVID-19 variant strain, named "501Y.V2," was isolated by the Guangdong provincial CDC and deposited in the National Pathogen Resource Collection Center, according to the China CDC.

RABAT -- Morocco announced suspension of all flights and passengers entry from Ireland, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand, as the North African country reported on Monday its first case of new coronavirus variant, official radio reported on Tuesday.

The ban has been already imposed on South Africa, Denmark and the United Kingdom.

BELGRADE -- Serbian health authorities approved the use of Sinopharm's COVID-19 vaccine on Monday evening, two days after a million doses were imported from China, enabling the country to begin with the mass immunization of its population.

"The import permit and a certificate of analysis were issued for the initial 100,000 doses of China's Sinopharm vaccine," Pavle Zelic, an official with the Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices of Serbia, told local media.

BANGKOK -- Thailand on Tuesday confirmed 171 new COVID-19 cases, mostly detected through active testing, according to Center for the COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

Of the new cases, 158 were domestic infections while 13 others referred to those who had returned from abroad and tested positive in this country, CCSA spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin told a press conference.

TBILISI -- Georgia on Tuesday reported 1,550 new COVID-19 cases, taking its total to 249,465, according to the country's National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC).

Data from the NCDC showed that 494 more recoveries were reported, bringing the national count to 235,130.

ADDIS ABABA -- The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ethiopia rose to 131,546 after 351 new cases were reported, the East African country's Ministry of Health said on Monday.

The ministry said that the number of COVID-19 related deaths in the country reached 2,033 as of Monday evening, including three new deaths reported during the last 24-hour period.

Some 116,335 COVID-19 patients have recovered so far, including 188 in the last 24-hour period, the ministry added. Enditem
