BEIRUT, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri urged on Tuesday all the Lebanese to take serious precautionary measures against COVID-19 to protect their families, a statement by Hariri's office said.

"It is important that people adhere to procedures set by the government. It is true that the state could not secure all people's needs but citizens are also responsible to protect their families," Hariri said after his meeting with Caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab.

Hariri said that both the state and the citizens must assume responsibility.

Lebanon has been facing a dangerous COVID-19 situation as the number of infections increased to unprecedented levels amid an incapacity by hospitals to receive a big number of patients for treatment.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun called on Tuesday to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday with the Higher Defense Council to extend the total lockdown in the country for an additional week until the beginning of February in an attempt to curb the virus' spread.

Lebanon's total number of COVID-19 cases stood at 255,956 while death toll from the virus reached 1,959. Enditem
