RIGA, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Freight traffic at Latvian ports declined 28 percent last year to roughly 45 million tons, the Transport Ministry informed on Tuesday.
Riga remained the Baltic country's leading port with 23.7 million tons reloaded in 2020. However, the port's freight turnover contracted 27.7 percent from 2019.
The port of Ventspils in northwestern Latvia reloaded 12.9 million tons of freight last year, down 36.9 percent from 2019, and the port of Liepaja in southwestern Latvia handled 6.6 million tons, down 10 percent year-on-year.
Latvia's smaller ports together handled 1,735 million tons of freight last year, down 5 percent from 2019.
Handling of bulk freight at Latvia's ports slowed 39.3 percent from a year before to 21.2 million tons in 2020, and the turnover of liquid freight, mainly oil, fell 19.9 percent to 11.7 million tons.
Reloading of general freight at the Latvian ports decreased 6.4 percent year-on-year to 12 million tons.
