Live COVID-19 updates: China's Heilongjiang reports 16 new confirmed, 31 asymptomatic cases

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

HARBIN -- Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province reported 16 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and 31 asymptomatic infections on Tuesday, local health authorities said Wednesday.

All the new cases have been sent to designated medical institutions, their close contacts and secondary close contacts have been put under medical isolation, and the places they visited have been disinfected, according to the Heilongjiang provincial health commission.

WASHINGTON -- The Trump administration's incompetence in handling COVID-19 has drawn harsh criticism from the academia as the country's death toll from the disease topped another chilling mark of 400,000 on Tuesday.

Never before in the recent century has an American president witnessed such a tragic loss of lives. The number is fast approaching the 405,000 U.S. fatalities during World War II and the pandemic is among the deadliest events in the country. The 1918 flu pandemic killed 675,000 Americans and at least 50 million worldwide.

HAVANA -- Cuba reported on Tuesday 330 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the national caseload to 18,773 and the nationwide death toll to 175, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Of the new infections, only nine were imported cases, the lowest number in 15 days, which corresponds to the restrictive measures for foreign entry into the country put in place at the beginning of the year.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil registered 1,192 deaths from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, raising the nationwide tally to 211,491, the Ministry of Health said Tuesday.

Tests detected 62,094 new cases, bringing the national caseload to 8,573,864, it said.

LISBON -- Portuguese Economy Minister Pedro Siza Vieira tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, the ministry said.

According to members of the government cabinet, Siza Vieira has "some symptoms" and will remain in isolation at home.

BEIJING -- The Chinese mainland reported 15 new imported COVID-19 cases Tuesday, bringing the total number of imported cases to 4,545.

Four new imported cases were reported in Shanghai, three in Guangdong, two each in Zhejiang, Sichuan and Shaanxi, and one each in Tianjin and Fujian, the National Health Commission said in its daily report Wednesday.

BEIJING -- The Chinese mainland on Tuesday reported 103 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 88 locally transmitted cases and 15 arriving from outside the mainland, the National Health Commission said Wednesday.

Of the locally transmitted cases, 46 were reported in Jilin, 19 in Hebei, 16 in Heilongjiang, and seven in Beijing, the commission said in its daily report.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 404 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Tuesday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 73,518.

The daily caseload was slightly up from 386 on the previous day, but it stayed below 500 for three straight days.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand has reported six more cases of COVID-19 in managed isolation since the last media statement on Monday, according to the Ministry of Health on Wednesday.

The newly reported imported cases came from South Africa, Britain, Zimbabwe, the United States and Russia. There are no new cases in the community.

SANTIAGO -- Chile on Tuesday reported 3,400 new cases of COVID-19 infection and 26 deaths from the disease in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 677,151 and the death toll to 17,573, the Ministry of Health said.

So far, a total of 24,025 people have received an initial dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 8,360 have received the second dose, according to the ministry.

ADDIS ABABA -- Ethiopia registered 181 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 131,727, the Ministry of Health said Tuesday.

The death toll from COVID-19 in the country has reached 2,037 as of Tuesday evening, after four new deaths were reported, Ethiopian Health Minister Lia Tadesse said on Twitter.

BERLIN -- German federal and state governments agreed on Tuesday evening to extend the current COVID-19 measures until at least Feb. 14.

Most shops and schools will remain closed and people will continue to be asked to limit their contacts and stay at home as much as possible for the next few weeks.

WASHINGTON -- About 2.5 million children in the United States have tested positive for COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic, according to the latest report of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Children's Hospital Association.

Over 211,000 new child COVID-19 cases were reported last week ending Jan. 14, the highest weekly increase since the pandemic began, according to the AAP. Enditem
