NAIROBI, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Six bodies of unidentified persons with gunshot wounds in the head were found dumped at Arabal area, in Baringo county of Kenya on Wednesday where security operation to disarm the bandits in the region is underway.

Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya said the scene was the same area security agencies are conducting a major operation to address increased cases of banditry.

Natembeya said an unknown number of bandits had attacked the Arabal area and stole 50 heads of cattle.

This comes in the wake of an ongoing security operation to flush out bandits and recover illegal weapons.

Clashes between the rival cattle-herding pastoralists in the region are common, with herders often carrying guns to protect their animals, but the recent fighting has been unusually heavy.

Livestock herding is the main livelihood and source of income in northern Kenya, and the hike in cattle thefts threatens to ignite cross-community reprisals and raids that could set the stage for a surge in ethnic fighting in the region. Enditem
