Live COVID-19 updates: France's daily cases hit two-month high

BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

PARIS -- The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in France hit a two-month high at 26,784, health authorities said on Wednesday.

A higher daily tally, at 28,393, was registered on Nov. 18, 2020, according to official data.

SANTIAGO -- The Chilean Ministry of Health on Wednesday reported 3,583 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 680,740, amid a surge in infections in the middle of summer.

Health authorities also reported 21 deaths from COVID-19, bringing the death toll in the South American country to 17,594.

TUNIS -- Tunisian Health Ministry on Wednesday night reported 3,890 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number of infections to 188,373.

The death toll from the virus rose by 77 to 5,921 in the North African country, the ministry said in a statement.

QUITO -- Ecuador registered 1,747 COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, for a total of 234,315 cases, the Ministry of Public Health reported Wednesday.

In its daily report, the ministry also reported 35 deaths from the virus in the same period, bringing the death toll to 9,810, in addition to 4,627 "probable deaths" from the virus.

JERUSALEM -- Israel's Ministry of Health reported 9,089 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number in the country to 574,718.

The death toll from COVID-19 in Israel reached 4,174 after 94 new fatalities were added, while the number of patients in serious condition increased from 1,147 to 1,163, out of 1,880 hospitalized patients.

RAMALLAH -- Palestinian Health Minister Mai al-Kaila on Wednesday announced that Palestine recorded 10 new deaths and 497 new COVID-19 cases in the Palestinian territories, bringing the total infections to 172,896 and the death toll to 1,918.

Meanwhile, Director of Hospitals in the Palestinian Ministry of Health Najja Nazzal told Xinhua that there is a big decrease in the occupancy rate in hospitals and medical centers that treat coronavirus patients.

RABAT -- Morocco's COVID-19 tally rose to 462,542 on Wednesday as 1,152 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Health, the death toll mounted to 8,043 as 32 COVID-19 patients died in the last 24 hours. Enditem
