Overnight stays in Israeli hotels fall 64.4 pct in 2020 due to COVID-19

JERUSALEM, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- The number of overnight stays in Israeli hotels has dropped by 64.4 percent in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the country's Central Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday.

Thus, the number of overnight stays in hotels in Israel decreased from 25.8 million in 2019 to 9.18 million in 2020.

The number of foreign tourists' overnight stays in Israeli hotels fell by 81.9 percent, from 12.1 million in 2019 to 2.19 million in the following year.

In addition, the number of overnight stays of Israelis in hotels throughout the country decreased by 48.9 percent in 2020, compared with the previous year.

Most hotels in Israel were closed between mid-March and late May 2020, as well as between mid-September and mid-November due to COVID-19 lockdowns imposed in the country.

The average hotel room occupancy in Israel was only 25 percent in 2020, compared to an average of 70 percent in the previous year. Enditem
