Canada's retail sales continuing up in November

OTTAWA, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Canada's retail sales rose 1.3 percent to 55.2 billion Canadian dollars in November 2020, according to Statistics Canada on Friday.

It was the seventh consecutive monthly gain due to higher sales at food and beverage stores, along with an uptick in e-commerce sales.

Excluding gasoline stations and motor vehicle and parts dealers, core retail sales were up 2.6 percent on higher sales at food and beverage and general merchandise stores, as well as building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers.

The sales of food and beverage stores grew 5.9 percent and supermarkets and other groceries except convenience stores soared 6.5 percent.

The sales of general merchandise stores rose 1.6 percent on higher sales in November while sales at building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers climbed 2.2 percent.

Sales were up in seven of 11 subsectors, representing 53.4 percent of retail trade.
