Live COVID-19 updates: Spain logs 42,885 new COVID-19 cases, regions tightening curbs

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MADRID -- The Spanish Health Ministry on Friday reported 42,885 new COVID-19 cases and 400 deaths in a 24-hour period.

The increases lift the country's total number of cases to 2,499,560 and the death toll to 55,441 since the pandemic began.

HELSINKI -- The Finnish government on Friday evening announced stricter restrictions on entry to the country from the rest of the European Union (EU) and a larger testing plan for arrivals, in an effort to curb the spread of the more infectious variants of COVID-19.

Interior Minister Maria Ohisalo said at a press conference that work-based travel from other EU countries will be restricted to only essential services. Acute family reasons would also be accepted and transit travel will be allowed.

PARIS -- France on Friday reported 23,292 more confirmed COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the country's total infections to 3,011,257, showed the government data website.

The country's COVID-19 death toll now stands at 72,647, 649 more than the previous day. Some 25,872 COVID-19 patients remain in hospital, including 2,912 in intensive care, up 173 and 36 respectively in one day.

SANTIAGO -- Chile on Friday reported 4,956 new daily cases of novel coronavirus infection, the highest figure since infections peaked in June, bringing the total caseload to 690,066.

According to the Ministry of Health, in the same 24 hours, 84 more people died from causes associated with COVID-19, raising the death toll to 17,786. Enditem
