4 killed in India's mica mine roof collapse

NEW DELHI, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed and two others injured when the roof of a mica mine collapsed in India's eastern state of Jharkhand, officials said Saturday.

The roof of the mica mine caved in on Thursday evening in the forest area of Koderma district, about 170 km north of Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand.

"Roof of a mica mine collapsed here on Thursday evening trapping six people. Two were rescued by locals the same day in injured condition, while as four were trapped underneath the debris," an official at the office of deputy commissioner Koderma said. "Last evening rescuers retrieved four bodies from the spot."

Meanwhile, the two injured are undergoing treatment at a hospital.

According to the official, the mine was being illegally operated inside the Koderma wildlife sanctuary.

Police have registered a case into the incident and ordered investigations to arrest the owner of the mine. Enditem
