ISTANBUL, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Turkish police detained 72 suspected migrant traffickers in wide-scale operations across the country, local media reported on Saturday.

Acting upon the order of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, police launched simultaneous operations in 12 provinces to capture a total of 94 suspects, the state-run Anadolu agency said.

Operations are going on to apprehend 22 others who are at large, it added.

Meanwhile, 1,477 irregular immigrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iraq and Syria who entered the country illegally with the help of this organization were also caught, Anadolu noted.

Turkey has been hosting over 4 million refugees in its territories, with most of them coming from Syria. Enditem
