WASHINGTON -- White House economic adviser Brian Deese said Friday that the United States risks falling into a "very serious economic hole" without decisive action, urging the Congress to approve more COVID-19 relief as soon as possible.

"It's pretty clear we're at a precarious moment for the virus and the economy," Deese, who serves as director of the National Economic Council, said at a White House daily press briefing Friday afternoon.

"It's a moment that requires decisive action to beat this pandemic and support the economic recovery that American families need," Deese said.

CANBERRA -- Australia's Education Minister Alan Tudge has revealed that the return of international students to the country is dependent on the availability of COVID-19 vaccines.

"We're really taking it week by week and month by month. Obviously, a big factor in all of this is the vaccine and how effective that will be. And should that vaccine be effective, then it really does make a big difference and we may be able to take numbers in again."

UNITED NATIONS -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday welcomed the U.S. decision to seek a five-year extension of the New START treaty and Russia's positive reaction to the U.S. proposal.

"The secretary-general welcomes the decision by the United States to seek a five-year extension of the New START treaty, as well as the Russian Federation's reiteration that it also seeks a five-year extension," said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for Guterres.

ROME -- The Italy-China Foundation on Friday unveiled a new initiative aimed at helping Italian companies and their shareholders to find commercial partners in China in preparation for doing business in the country.

"The project aims to help Italian and Chinese companies... that need to be supported during a delicate phase like the one we are in to establish collaborative relationships," Mario Boselli, president of the Italy-China Foundation, said during the online event.
