Live COVID-19 updates: Iranian president says COVID-19 vaccination to start "soon" in Iran

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TEHRAN -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday that vaccination against the COVID-19 in the country will start in the next few days, official IRNA news agency reported.

Rouhani said that the use of foreign vaccine is necessary before the domestic vaccine is produced.

DOHA -- The Qatari health ministry on Saturday announced 251 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 148,772, the official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

Meanwhile, 121 more people recovered from the virus, bringing the overall recoveries to 144,740, while the fatalities remained 248 for the sixth day running, according to a ministry statement quoted by QNA.

LONDON -- London Mayor Sadiq Khan has called for tougher rules on wearing face coverings outside after revealing that more than 12,000 Londoners have died with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Evening Standard newspaper reported.

The mayor said there was a need for face coverings where people were "cheek by jowl" in outdoor locations, and revealed concerns at the number of Londoners in public places because the current lockdown rules were not tight enough.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 436 new COVID-19 cases and 22 new deaths on Saturday, making the tally at 531,326 and death toll at 8,003, the Directorate General of Health Services said.

The official data showed that 11,115 samples were tested in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.

HANOI -- Vietnam reported no new cases of COVID-19 infection on Saturday, leaving the total confirmed cases in the country at 1,548 with 35 deaths, according to its Ministry of Health.

The ministry also announced that 1,411 patients have been given the all-clear as of Saturday.

SHIJIAZHUANG -- Shijiazhuang, a megacity in north China's Hebei Province, has completed three rounds of citywide nucleic acid testing in 17 days to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Since the new cluster infections were spotted in early January, Shijiazhuang has taken a swift response to contain the epidemic spread and over 30 million samples had been collected and tested from Jan. 6 to 22 to best detect the cunning virus.

NEW DELHI -- The India government on Saturday said over 300,000 people were vaccinated against the COVID-19 in a single day for the first time since the beginning of inoculation drive last week.

The highest number of vaccinations so far was carried out on Friday. Enditem
