MAPUTO, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Cyclone Eloise has caused at least four deaths, injured 12 and affected 163,000 people (about 32,660 families), in four Mozambican provinces including Inhambane, Sofala, Manica and Zambezia, the National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction (INGD) said in the port city of Beira on Sunday.

4,000 houses and 11 hospitals were also destroyed with the passage of the cyclone, according to the INGD official Antonio Beleza who was releasing the preliminary data on the damage caused by the cyclone which made landfall on Saturday morning.

"With the passage of Cyclone Eloise, the flood scenario was aggravated, especially in the Buzi basin. At this moment, with the situation easing, there is a tendency to drop in the Buzi and Pungue basins, in Sofala," said Beleza.

The INGD official added that as for the Save River basin, due to the runoff generated in Zimbabwe, associated with intense rainfall in the national territory, floods were registered in the lower neighborhoods of the region.

The National Meteorological Institute (INAM) said that the cyclone has already left Mozambique a low-pressure system, no longer posing danger to the country.

According to the Beira mayor Daviz Simango, four people died as a result of the passage of Cyclone Eloise, including a child.

"We regret the death of a child under two years old who died inside the house that collapsed in the absence of her parents," he said, adding that data is still being gathered. Enditem
