SUVA, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Fiji on Monday appointed environment prosecutors in its efforts to protect natural environment of the island nation.
According to Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), Fiji's Minister for Environment Mahendra Reddy said the appointment will help them in enforcing environment laws to take actions against offenders of environment-related laws and regulations.
Reddy said these prosecutors have received related training and are able to track illegal activities affecting Fiji's environment.
"This training has led our environment officers to better understand the requirements of prosecution and equipping them to undertake prosecution matters in a more timely manner," said the minister.
Fiji's Director of Public Prosecutions Christopher Pryde said the appointments will send a strong message to individuals and companies.
"The appointment of prosecutors for the Department of Environment sends a strong signal to the public of Fiji and the wider world that people and companies that infringe Fiji's environmental laws will be dealt with swiftly and severely," he said. Enditem
