NAIROBI, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Kenya beach volleyball has been given the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games participation lifeline after the world volleyball governing body (FIVB) directed the repeat of their qualification matches, an official announced on Monday.

Kenya had forfeited its chance to gain a ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Games after failing to honor the second round matches in Banjul, Gambia (men) and Abuja, Nigeria (women) after COVID-19 brought global sporting activities to a standstill.

Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) president Waithaka Kioni said the country's appeal for the repeat of the women's match was successful while the country remains hopeful the men's match will also be granted a chance to repeat their match.

"Following our appeal for the repeat of second-round beach volleyball Olympics qualifiers due to the COVID-19 related travel restrictions imposed on some teams, which included Kenyan teams, I am pleased to report that the FIVB has approved a repeat of the women qualifiers," Kioni said in a statement issued in Nairobi.

"This qualification event will take place in Nigeria either in late March or early April 2021 and we remain hopeful that a repeat of the men's event will also be granted," he added.

Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) has requested their members, the national federations to send in their registration for participation in the 2020 African Nations Age Group championships.

"The 2020 age group championships (Women U20, Girls U18, Boys U19 and Men U21) will be used as qualifiers for the 2021 FIVB World Championship and in view of the fact that volleyball activities have resumed in a number of National Federations, we appreciate if you could confirm by email to CAVB, the participation of your national teams in the competitions mentioned above," CAVB said in a statement.

It stated that the FIVB board of administration resolved that if any of the confederations cannot host the qualifiers by Feb. 28, the continental representatives in the 2021 FIVB World Championship will be determined based on the latest FIVB ranking for underage groups in the respective categories.

CAVB has set Jan. 27 for all the national federations to confirm their participation to conform with the FIVB deadline next month. Enditem
