SUVA, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's government health stations will soon change from the use of diesel fuels to renewable energy, and this will also apply in health centers in the rural and maritime areas where they have no Electricity Fiji Limited grids, Fijian Infrastructure Minister Jone Usamate said on Tuesday.

"We need to make sure that they have renewable energy so that they can have the energy to run all the health equipment whether it's the x-ray and all those machines and also very importantly, they need to do solar refrigerators that can keep their vaccines," Usamate said, according to Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) on Tuesday.

The minister said the energy solar alliance has agreed to give funding of around 50,000 Fijian dollars (about 24,515 U.S. dollars) to put renewable energy solar panels in several health centers they have identified.

Fiji may not achieve its target under the National Development Plan to use 100 percent renewable energy by 2036, he said, adding that there are some setbacks to achieving this goal, including the inability to secure funding and a lack of expertise.

"It's quite considerable so if we can move away gradually over time from energy from fossil fuels and divert it to renewable energy, those costs will decline," Usamate said. Enditem
