Live COVID-19 updates: Thailand confirms 819 new cases, one more death

BEIJING, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BANGKOK -- Thailand on Wednesday confirmed 819 new COVID-19 infections, with most of the cases being found in a province that is the epicenter of the latest outbreak first detected in mid-December, official data showed.

This came after the Southeast Asian country reported a record daily caseload of 959 Tuesday following mass testing in Samut Sakhon province, where the latest outbreak erupted after a seafood market vendor was confirmed of being infected last month.

TOKYO -- The Tokyo metropolitan government reported 973 new daily COVID-19 cases in the capital on Wednesday, bringing the city's total tally of people testing positive for the virus to 96,507, according to preliminary figures as of 3:00 p.m. local time.

The latest figure, as was the case on Sunday and Monday, dipped below the 1,000-mark, before rising above the threshold on Tuesday where new daily infections in the city of 14 million rose to 1,026.

BEIJING -- A total of 22.77 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been administered in China by Tuesday, the National Health Commission said here Wednesday.

Zeng Yixin, deputy head of the commission, made the announcement at a press conference held by the State Council joint prevention and control mechanism against COVID-19.

BEIJING -- China's daily testing capacity for COVID-19 has surpassed 15 million samples, the National Health Commission (NHC) said Wednesday.

"Our testing capacity is even stronger when we conduct pool testing, for example, five or 10 samples in one batch," said Zeng Yixin, deputy head of the NHC, at a press conference.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 10,689,527 on Wednesday even as 12,689 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the federal health ministry.

According to the official data, the death toll mounted to 153,724 as 137 COVID-19 patients died since Tuesday morning. Enditem
