MONTEVIDEO, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Uruguay's River Plate are in negotiations with several European suitors for the sale of highly rated teenager Matias Arezo, the club's president said on Wednesday.
Arezo has been a revelation in Uruguay since making his professional debut in 2019, with 18 goals in 50 first-team appearances across all competitions.
The 18-year-old's prolific scoring form has reportedly attracted the interest of Benfica and Sevilla, among other clubs.
"We are focused on a transfer for a value that would be impossible for any club in Uruguay to pay," River Plate president Willie Tucci told Radio Uruguay.
"Matias does not need to prove himself at [Uruguayan giants] Penarol and Nacional. He is already the best number 9 of his generation."
Tucci did not reveal the club's asking price for the striker but local media reported he could fetch up to 20 million euros (24 million U.S. dollars).
Arezo has represented Uruguay at U15, U17 and U23 levels. He was called up by senior national manager Oscar Tabarez for World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Brazil last November but missed the matches because of a muscle injury. Enditem
