LOS ANGELES, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) on Thursday announced films eligible for consideration in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature and International Feature Film categories for the 93rd Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars.

A total of 27 films will compete for the Best Animated Feature Film this year, said the AMPAS in a press release. Pixar's "Soul" and Cartoon Saloon's "Wolfwalkers" are considered as frontrunners in the category. "Over the Moon," a Chinese-American co-production between Netflix Animation and the Shanghai-based Pearl Studio, is also among early favorites to enter the shortlist of five nominees.

For the Documentary Feature race, a record-breaking total of 238 films are eligible for consideration in the category this year. A shortlist of 15 films will be announced on Feb. 9.

Also on Feb. 9, 15 films selected from 93 contenders will be announced on the shortlist in the category of International Feature Films.

Biographical sports film "Leap" was selected as the Chinese mainland's representative for the award.

Directed by Peter Chan and starring Gong Li as legendary volleyball coach Lang Ping, the film shines a spotlight on the Chinese women's national volleyball team, one of the leading and most successful squads in women's international volleyball, depicting their endeavors over generations to win glory for the country.

"Better Days" and "A Sun" will represent China's Hong Kong and Taiwan in the competition respectively.

Nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards will be announced on March 15. The 93rd Oscars will be held on April 25. Enditem
