DAMASCUS, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed, including a child, and 15 others wounded in an explosion that rocked the rebel-held Afrin area in northern Syria on Saturday, a war monitor reported.

The explosion was caused by a car bomb, which went off in the Sinaa neighborhood in Afrin in the northern countryside of Aleppo, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The death toll could likely rise due to the number of critically wounded people, the Britain-based watchdog group added.

State news agency SANA also reported the explosion, without giving further details.

Explosions have become common in Afrin and other areas controlled by the rebels in northern Syria amid a state of lawlessness and chaos. Afrin has been controlled by the Turkey-backed rebels since 2018. Enditem
