BERLIN, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Five people were injured in a gas explosion on Friday morning in Germany's Bavaria state, including one in serious condition, according to police.

The accident took place in a Bavarian Red Cross building in the city of Memmingen, said the local authority in a statement.

One cleaner and three rescue service staff were seriously injured, and another employee was slightly injured, according to the Bavarian Red Cross.

The damage to the building was "immense," the German Press Agency quoted a police spokesperson as saying. The emergency services suspected a leak in a nearby gas pipe.

A spokeswoman for Memmingen said that several houses within 100 meters of the site had been evacuated.

Over 200 emergency services from the police, fire brigade, rescue and medical services and the municipal building yard were on duty, the city said. Enditem
