DHAKA, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh has launched countrywide COVID-19 vaccination drive Sunday after a two-day pilot immunization program at the end of the last month.

Bangladeshi Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Sunday morning inaugurated the massive immunization drive by addressing health professionals through video conferencing from the capital Dhaka.

As part of the drive, vaccine shots are being administered in some 1,015 health centers across the country, including dozens in Dhaka.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Jan. 28 virtually inaugurated the country's pilot COVID-19 vaccination drive in Dhaka with a nurse getting the first shot. A total of 529 more people had then also received the COVID-19 vaccine.

In her parliament speech, Hasina had earlier said the government has taken adequate measures to vaccinate over 16.9 million people on a priority basis.

Bangladesh on Jan. 21 got 2 million doses of vaccines developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca from India as gift. It bought another 5 million doses of the vaccine from the Serum Institute of India which arrived here on Jan. 25. Enditem
