CAIRO, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Sunday discussed with his Lebanese counterpart Charbel Wehbe the bilateral relations and means of dealing with the ongoing crisis in Lebanon.

Shoukry underscored Egypt's important role in resolving the crisis in Lebanon, by helping it form "an independent government that secures Lebanon's interest is a priority for the region," said Ahmed Hafez, spokesperson of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

The new Lebanese government should work on gaining the support of the international community in a manner that prevents Lebanon from falling under the influence of regional or internal powers, Shoukry was quoted as saying.

The current economic situation requires the immediate adoption of economic reforms after forming the new government, he added.

Wehbe briefed Shoukry on the current situation in Lebanon, which has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and the huge explosions in Beirut Port last August, while expressing great appreciation for the Egypt's political and economic support to Lebanon.

The Lebanese top diplomat is in Cairo to attend the extraordinary meeting of the Arab League Council to be held on Monday to discuss the Palestine cause. Enditem
