UNITED NATIONS -- The president of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Volkan Bozkir, on Thursday wished a happy Lunar New Year to the Chinese people.

NAIROBI -- The number of COVID-19 related deaths in Africa has spiked as the continent grapples with local transmission of highly contagious strains of the virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday.

Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa, said the death toll from the pandemic increased by 40 percent in January, fuelled by a second wave of infections and new variants that have overwhelmed the continent's public health systems.

HOUSTON -- At least five people were killed and a massive pileup was caused during a serious traffic accident Thursday morning in north Texas, the United States, local media reported.

According to KXAS-TV and Dallas Morning News reports, on the interstate highway north of downtown Fort Worth, about 100 vehicles were involved in a pileup. Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Michael Drivdahl said at least five people died and 36 injured people had been transported to local hospitals. (US-road accident)

ISLAMABAD -- A five-year-old child was killed and seven children were injured in a cross-border attack from Afghanistan into Pakistani territory on Thursday, an army statement said.

The incident happened at 2:50 p.m. local time (9:50 a.m. GMT) when terrorists fired five rockets from inside Afghanistan into Bajaur district in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the military's media wing Inter-Services Public Relations said in the statement.
