HONG KONG, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- The COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread in Asia-Pacific countries as Indonesia registered 9,869 new cases on Friday while India's tally rose to 10,880,603.

The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 9,869 within one day to 1,201,859, with the death toll adding by 275 to 32,656, the Health Ministry said on Friday.

According to the ministry, 11,000 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 1,004,117.

India's COVID-19 tally rose to 10,880,603 as 9,309 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the health ministry.

According to the official data, the death toll mounted to 155,447 as 87 COVID-19 patients died since Thursday morning.

There are still 135,926 active cases in the country, while 10,589,230 people have been discharged so far from hospitals after medical treatment.

So far over 7.5 million people, mainly health workers, have been vaccinated across the country.

The Department of Health (DOH) of the Philippines reported 2,022 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 545,300.

The death toll climbed to 11,495 after 26 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said. It added that 333 more patients recovered, raising the total number of recoveries to 500,654.

The government is easing some coronavirus quarantine restrictions in Metro Manila to spur economic activities in areas under general community quarantine, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said on Friday.

South Korea reported 403 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Thursday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 82,837.

The daily caseload was down from 504 in the previous day, but it hovered above 100 since Nov. 8 last year owing to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province as well as imported cases.

Eleven more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 1,507. The total fatality rate stood at 1.82 percent.

Thailand confirmed 175 new cases of coronavirus infection, mostly domestic, official reports showed.

Thailand has so far confirmed 24,279 cases, 21,681 of which were domestic ones while 2,598 others were imported cases.

The Chinese-made Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine will be used for people in the 10 provinces where a large number of domestic infections have been reported since last December.

Those who will receive the jabs from later this month until April include medical and public health personnel, those with chronic illnesses and those aged above 60, according to Sophon Mekhathon, assistant to the public health minister and head of the government's subcommittee in charge of the anti-coronavirus vaccination.

Afghanistan reported 28 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, raising its national tally to 55,473, including 4,656 active cases, the country's Ministry of Public Health said in a statement.

"Laboratories conducted 1,391 tests during the past 24 hours, out of the total tests 28 were positive COVID-19 cases from eight provinces of Afghanistan's 34 provinces," the ministry said.

Meanwhile, 111 people recovered during the past 24 hours while three deaths were reported, raising the death toll to 2,427.

Vietnam recorded two new domestically transmitted cases of COVID-19 infection on Friday, raising the total confirmed cases in the country to 2,142 with 35 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.

As many as 1,531 patients have been given the all-clear, the ministry said, adding that nearly 129,100 people are being quarantined and monitored.

The latest wave of COVID-19 infections hit Vietnam on Jan. 28, with 555 community cases so far confirmed, according to the ministry. Enditem
