BRATISLAVA, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Inter Bratislava moved into second place of the Slovak basketball league as they beat BC Prievidza 83-73 on Saturday to clinch the seventh consecutive victory.
The league is going on a two-week break due to the national team's fixtures and the team from the country's capital wanted to finish strong by keeping its series of victories going and remain undefeated on home ground. The penultimate Prievidza, on the other hand, had lost four in a row and is in danger of slipping to the bottom of the rankings. A victory against Inter would have been a big boost.
But in the 14th-round match-up which had been postponed due to coronavirus quarantine, the squad of Oleg Melescenko, the Kazakh coach and former player who has settled in Slovakia permanently, showed Prievidza what's what from the start and led after the first period by 10 points. They never surrendered the lead, despite allowing the visitors to cut the deficit to a single point for a few moments in the final quarter.
Prievidza's 21-year old guard Matej Majercak dominated the scoreboard with 28 points but the spotlight was once again on the home team's Argentinian go-to guy and second-best scorer of the Slovak Basketball League (averaging 18.9 points per game) Lautaro Lopez and his second triple-double in a row, who scored 21 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out 14 assists.
