SOFIA, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian customs inspectors have seized more than 5.2 kg of smuggled gold bars at the Kalotina checkpoint near the country's border with Serbia, authorities said here on Monday.

The precious contraband items were found in a car with Romanian registration driven by a Turkish-born German citizen, which entered Bulgaria at around 3 a.m. local time (0100 GMT) on Tuesday, the National Customs Agency said in a statement.

The customs officers carried out a thorough inspection and found three boxes with a total of 134 gold bars of different weights -- one gram, five grams, 250 grams, 500 grams, and 1,000 grams, the statement said.

According to their last annual report, Bulgarian customs seized 23 kg of gold in 2020. Enditem
