ABUJA, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian police have launched aerial surveillance in search of students who were recently kidnapped in the country's north-central state of Niger, police said on Thursday.

Frank Mba, a police spokesperson, told reporters in Abuja that personnel of the criminal investigations department, as well as one police aerial surveillance helicopter, were deployed to collaborate with the military and other law enforcement agents, to rescue the abductees and bring the perpetrators to book.

In an attack on Wednesday, at the Government Science College, a boarding school in Kagara town of Niger State, one student was killed and 42 others were abducted by gunmen, including 27 students, three school staffers, and their 12 family members.

Mba said the joint search and rescue mission, involving the police, the military, and other law enforcement agencies will ensure a safe rescue of the abductees.

Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu has also ordered the deployment of additional tactical, intelligence, and investigative assets for the rescue operation, added the police spokesperson. Enditem
