STOCKHOLM, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Swedish lithium-ion battery maker Northvolt said on Friday that it will invest 200 million U.S. dollars in a plant in Gdansk, Poland.

Billed "Europe's largest factory for energy storage solutions," the 50,000 square-meter factory will have an initial output of battery modules with a combined capacity of 5 Gigawatt hours (GWh) when production starts next year.

"Securing battery cell manufacturing capacity in Europe is key for its industrial future, but what is equally critical is the industrial capacity for integrating cells into real-world solutions," the company's co-founder and CEO Peter Carlsson said in a press release.

"It is this that the new factory will deliver -- sophisticated, sustainable energy storage systems to support the transformation of Europe's electricity grid and its industry," he added. Enditem
