BERLIN, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Borussia Dortmund increased Schalke's relegation worries with a thumping 4-0 away win in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Dortmund assumed control from the whistle and had its first chance after just seven minutes when Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann denied Jadon Sancho.

As the match progressed, Schalke defended deep and kept all its men behind the ball to make Dortmund's life difficult.

Dortmund continued on the front foot but the hosts had to wait until the 42nd minute for the opener, as Jadon Sancho dispossessed Benjamin Stambouli to score from the edge of the box.

Dortmund gained momentum and doubled its advantage only three minutes later after Sancho's pinpoint cross allowed Erling Haaland to score with a sideways scissor-kick from inside the box.

After the interval, the Royal Blues came out with all guns blazing, knowing that they needed points in the relegation battle.

The BVB had luck in the 51st minute as goalkeeper Marwin Hitz tipped Suat Serdar's shot onto the left-hand post.

Schalke kept going but youngster Matthew Hoppe wasn't able to overcome Hitz from a sharp angle, while Timo Becker headed over the target moments later.

Just when the hosts were about to take over, Dortmund tripled its lead as Raphael Guerreiro traded a one-two with Marco Reus before slotting home with a low shot at the hour mark.

Schalke's resistance was broken as Dortmund made it four in the 79th minute when Haaland poked home Jude Bellingham's assist.

With the result, bottom side Schalke suffered its 15th defeat of the season and sit nine points adrift of safety, while Dortmund cement sixth spot in the Bundesliga standings.

The following matches conclude the 22nd round of matches on Sunday: Augsburg host Bayer Leverkusen, Hertha Berlin clash with second-placed RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim take on Werder Bremen. Enditem
