CANBERRA, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- A Canberra fair for wedding was held last weekend in the Australian capital which attracted many visitors.

It came after marriages were thwarted by COVID-19 restrictions last year.

At the fair people could meet with wedding planning companies and photographers, and watch the fashion show of newly designed wedding dresses.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics last November, the number of marriages fell by more than 30 percent in the first half of 2020.

An important cause of the drop was the COVID-19 restrictions. At the height of the pandemic, weddings were capped at five attendees. After the restriction was eased, social distancing was still required.

Loretta from event planning business LorettaiDesign told Xinhua that because situation in Canberra was better than other states, they received customers from elsewhere.

"Canberra has not as much restrictions as in other states," she said. "We have seen people coming interstates, from Sydney, from Melbourne, from Brisbane. They are coming here, consulting with us," She said. "Brides and grooms interstate still wanting to get married this year would consider Canberra as they would get a certainly wedding."

"At the moment we are very lucky to be in the position that we are in," said Chelsea Lenore from a wedding photo and planning business Red Carpet Event.

She noted that she saw many people preparing for their weddings this year, an observation shared by Karina D'Ambrosio with the wedding gifts and sweet treat company Sweetest Moments.

"A lot of people get really eager and keen," she said. "They come here and get ideas...I do see a lot of people will get married in October this year and also next year."

"Things are definitely improving," she said. Enditem
