RABAT, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- A total of 9.5 tonnes of cannabis have been seized on Monday during an operation on the Sidi Allal Bahraoui motorway, 30 km east of Moroccan capital Rabat, National Police said in a statement.

The banned substance was concealed in 380 packages inside a truck of frozen food products, it added.

The truck's driver has been remanded in custody pending the completion of the investigation.

Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis during the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

Moroccan security services seized a total of 217 tonnes of cannabis in 2020, 37 tonnes more than that of 2019, according to official statistics. Enditem
