ISLAMABAD, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Mutlaq bin Majed Al-Qahtani, special envoy of Qatar's foreign minister for counterterrorism and mediation of conflict resolution, has held talks with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Chief of Army Staff Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa, focusing on the Afghan peace process.

The Foreign Ministry of Pakistan said on Monday that Qureshi reiterated during the meeting with the special envoy that Pakistan strongly believes in a negotiated settlement as there is no military solution to the conflict in Afghanistan.

Emphasizing that peace and stability in Afghanistan are in Pakistan's interest, Qureshi underscored the need to remain vigilant of the role of spoilers seeking to undermine the peace process, according to a foreign ministry statement.

Qureshi appreciated Qatar's positive and constructive efforts as the host of the U.S.-Taliban talks that culminated in the peace agreement and the subsequent intra-Afghan negotiations. He highlighted that both Pakistan and Qatar have facilitated the Afghan peace process, according to the statement.

The Qatari special envoy also called on Bajwa at the General Headquarters of the Pakistan army in Rawalpindi, an army statement said.

During the meeting, matters of mutual interest, regional security situation, cooperation in various fields and facilitation of the reconciliation process in Afghanistan were discussed in detail, according to the statement. Enditem
