SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's overseas plastic card spending almost halved last year on the back of the COVID-19 pandemic across the world, central bank data showed Tuesday.
Local residents spent 10.31 billion U.S. dollars abroad using credit, debit and check cards in 2020, down 46.1 percent from the previous year, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK).
It came as the global COVID-19 pandemic discouraged South Korean people from traveling abroad. The number of local residents going overseas was 4.28 million in 2020, down 85.1 percent from the prior year.
Meanwhile, the foreigners' plastic card spending here amounted to 4.05 billion dollars in 2020, down 59.1 percent from a year earlier. Enditem
